SS-31 (elamipretide, also designated MTP-131) is a mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide of the Szeto-Schiller class. Its defining property is selective accumulation at the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it associates with the phospholipid cardiolipin, a mechanism that separates it from peptides acting at cell-surface receptors.

In vitro and preclinical research focuses on cardiolipin binding, electron-transport-chain and oxidative-phosphorylation efficiency, mitochondrial membrane potential, and reduction of reactive oxygen species.
